DRC's work on reintegration support

Voices of returnees

DRC Asylum has, in cooperation with local reintegration partners, made reintegration programs available since 2018 and been involved in more than 300 individual reintegration processes. Through counselling service in Denmark, close cooperation with local partners, virtual follow-up with returnees and in-country visits to both reintegration partners and returnees, DRC has gained significant experience in return and reintegration processes.

New series from DRC Asylum

Voices of returnees is a new series by DRC Asylum. The series aims to shed light on what it means to return, not through statistics or policy analysis, but through the personal stories of people who have returned from Denmark to different countries. The publications are not evaluations of specific reintegration programs or academic studies. Instead, the goal is simply to share firsthand insights into the return and reintegration process; insights that are personal, complex, and rarely heard in public debates.

Report on experiences of return to Thailand, 2026

Thailand

The report shares personal experiences from persons who have returned from Denmark to Thailand with reintegration support, with particular focus on persons who have been subjected to human trafficking.

Since 2020, DRC and Caritas Thailand have collaborated to provide reintegration support to people returning from Denmark to Thailand. Between 2020 and mid-December 2025, 61 persons without residence permits in Denmark have returned through this cooperation.

The report is informed by the experiences and perspectives of returnees, gathered through DRC’s collaboration with Caritas Thailand over the past several years. Most importantly, it draws on interviews with 15 women conducted during DRC’s most recent visit to Thailand in May 2025. The voices of these women form the core of the report.

Report on experiences of return to Iraq, 2025

Iraq

The report shares the experiences of 29 rejected asylum seekers who returned to Iraq from Denmark between 2018 and 2023. It is based on qualitative interviews conducted during DRC’s visit to Iraq in autumn 2023, as well as follow-up telephone surveys.

The returnees are adults aged 20 to 69 who received reintegration support through the European Technology and Training Centre (ETTC).

Their time away from Iraq ranged from 5 months to over 20 years, with most having been away for 3 to 8 years before returning.
